Attack On Titan made its highly anticipated return for Season 3 of the series on Sunday afternoon.

And episode 1 of Attack On Titan, titled "Smoke Signal," covered a variety of plot points that will more than likely manifest one of the most shocking and convoluted storylines of the anime series yet.

Caution, Spoilers below:

Season 3 picks up with Commander Levi’s Survey Corps located outside the city to protect Eren and Historia while Hange experiments with Eren to see if he can harden his titan form so that they can retake Wall Maria.

But it seems he was unable to do so, taking the form of a half-titan and half-human that had to be ripped off the titan corpse.

As the episode unfolds, Hange finds out that Pastor Nick was killed. And her hunch is that the new branch of Military Police, The First Interior Squad, tortured him as part of the royal government’s ploy to find out what information he gave the Survey Corps, then, dispose of him.

There’s also a question of why the government is all of a sudden expending rations to the people to appease the moral towards them. And after Levi’s troop escapes a raid of their cabin from military police, Eren and Historia’s body doubles are kidnapped as they travel the Trost District.

After Mikasa leads the retrieval of the doubles, Levi attempts to put the pieces together of how everything's connected, revealing a sinister character red herring that could sway the plot—Kenny the Ripper.

As Levi’s squad looks to get to Eren, they are intercepted by the mysterious, yet the haunting arrival of the legendary mercenary Kenny The Ripper, whom Levi has a history with growing up.

The myriad of circumstances that popped up in the episode raises plenty of ongoing questions.

  1. Why did the government add a new branch of the military?
  2. Who and why was Pastor Nick killed, thus silencing him?
  3. Why were 60 percent of humanities rations distributed by the central government—food is hard to come by—that’s odd?
  4. Why is Kenny the Ripper back all of a sudden? Levi and Kenny have a history and before Kenny’s deadly arrival, Levi talks about the urban legend of Kenny killing 100 poiliceman—is he working with the government to capture Eren and Historia?

Lots of serious questions and character reveals to sift through in just the first episode of the new season.
