If the newest report in this never-ending soap opera is to be believed, that is.
The past three weeks have been filled with what feels like never-ending drama regarding James Gunn, Disney and Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Now, it might finally be coming to an end (going to stress the word might on that one).
It all started when Gunn was fired from the project after some inappropriate tweets he wrote came into the limelight a year ago. The fan backlash was instantaneous, as Gunn had already apologized for the tweets before they were made public like this.
The Guardians of the Galaxy cast, too, voiced their concerns with Disney’s choice, as they wanted to see Gunn brought back on as director — to the point where Marvel made a statement saying they disagreed with Disney’s choice.
That statement caused enough noise for Gunn to score a private meeting with Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn.
According to the Entertainment Weekly, though, this meeting was just to “clear the air” as Gunn will not be returning to Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige was not in attendance of the meeting (which seems a little fishy), but reportedly now stands by that decision.
People still aren’t happy about Disney’s decision, which I get. Gunn recently released another statement about his past tweets, saying that “I have regretted them for many years since — not just because they were stupid, not funny at all, wildly insensitive and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.”
He’s clearly sorry about his mistakes, and yet, Disney won’t let it go.
While I certainly understand why someone would be upset with Gunn’s tweets, he’s clearly changed in the past ten years and this is entirely different than something like a Harvey Weinstein situation — they’re just tweets. Gross tweets, yes, and I believe everyone should be held accountable for what they chose to tweet, but he’s more than made up for the things he said.
Dave Bautista, who previously threatened to quit the MCU if Gunn wasn’t brought back on board, isn’t too happy either. He recently posted this tweet in response:
I still don’t agree with Disney’s decision here, but I can accept it as it’s really not all that surprising since this was a lose-lose situation from the very beginning. Hopefully, we can all learn a thing or two from this and move on, as attention will now turn to who Disney gets to replace James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
I’d bet a lot of money that they’re making a lot of phone calls over to Taika Waititi’s residence right around now.
