Eccarius just became a lot more interesting.
There are a lot of twists and turns in the newest episode of Preacher — entitled “Hitler” — that seems to suggest this show is leading to a pretty promising finale.
Given the name of the episode let’s start with Adol—er, David Hitler. That’s the name he’s going by now, given that he’s escaped from Hell and is trying to keep a low-profile as a sandwich artist in a Subway-like restaurant.
It can’t last, of course. The Saint of Killers came to get Eugene in the previous episode and, in this one, he’s picking up Hitler two. The last we see from any of them is the Saint of Killers marching the dynamic duo back into Satan’s underbelly so that he can finally have his revenge.
The most interesting angle in this episode of Preacher, I think, is that of Cassidy.
After spending more and more time with Eccarius, Cass is beginning to be won over into his lifestyle. Sure, he’s still a little iffy about turning people, but Eccarius is doing it for a good cause — these are good people who want to be turned into vampires so that they can go out into the rest of the world and promote progressive vampire-friendly rights.
That’s not the only thing Cassidy is being convinced of. The more and Eccarius hang out, the more it’s evident something is growing between the two of them — right up until the point where they begin to make-out and lie down in a coffin together (an unexpected but welcome and forward-thinking twist).
They also dodge a grail/Catholic priest ambush together, which feels pretty out of nowhere and forced into this episode, but I guess they have to give something for Hoover to do.
Sadly, I don’t think Cassidy and Eccarius’ relationship is going to last either. While Cassidy is now on board with Eccarius’ way of life — to the point where Cassidy has begun turning people into vampires himself — his new love interest is hiding a secret.
That one girl who Cassidy went on a date with a few episodes back — who is now actually a vampire, mind you — gets in Eccarius’ car, ready to be driven to the airport so she can be sent to a foreign country and begin speaking on behalf of her new species.
She doesn’t make it to the airport. She doesn’t even make it out of Eccarius’ garage. Turns out, no one ever has — it’s all a lie, as Eccarius has killed every single one of his victims that he previously turned.
That’s going to be a pretty major problem for Cassidy later down the road but, for now, I’m convinced that Eccarius means him no harm as the two have a genuine connection between the two.
Then again, Jesse and Tulip also have a genuine connection, and they’re finding themselves separated once again.
Now that Jesse is in a desperate place and has agreed to the grail’s conditions so he can escape Gran’ma, Her Starr has come to Angelville once again to work out a negotiation.
He’s offering Gran’ma pretty much whatever she wants, in exchange for Jesse’s freedom. After thinking about it and making some pretty rude gestures up front, there’s only one thing she’ll accept: souls.
Lucky for them, Starr knows exactly where they can get thousands of them: a manufacturing plant in Japan — the very same one that Jesse and Tulip stole from in season two — makes them by the bucket-load.
Unlucky for, well, pretty much everyone, Starr and Jesse have more important matters to take care of, so they’re sending the B team in to go retrieve them: Jody, Tulip and Featherstone.
Putting aside whatever drama Jody and Tulip might still have between each other, Tulip and Featherstone can’t even stand to be in the same room for more than twenty-seconds without trying to kill one another. This 16-hour plane ride is most definitely going to be a drag.
It’s the only choice all of them have, however, as the Grail HQ is demanding Jesse be brought in immediately — and not in the way that the poor preacher expected.
Upon arriving, Starr gives him a quick word of advice, telling him to take the shot when he gets the chance. Confused, Jesse then finds himself at gunpoint as the elevator that their open to reveal the All-Father, greedily starring down on him. Apparently, the All-Father brought Custer in to kill him and has no idea what’s really going on here.
Gran’ma is beginning to, though. While Featherstone and Tulip were arguing, they let it slip that Jesse was trying to get the Genesis back. TC had no idea what this meant at the time, but after everyone else left Angelville he asked Gran’ma. She recognized it instantly and understood what it meant — Jesse doesn’t plan on coming back at all. He has to be stopped and he has to be stopped now.
The drama, somehow, gets better and better. Even though this season of Preacher is 13 episodes long, it has yet to feel like it’s dragging.
