A Dangerous Method, directed by David Cronenberg, is a film exploring the relationship between the fledgeling psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortenson) when a patient called Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) becomes something more than just a study. The work Jung and Freud are conducting gets thrown into disarray when the beautiful Sabina is taken as their subject. Freud sees her as he sees any other of his patients, keeping a professional emotional distance from her, but Jung begins to feel something more for this troubled girl. As rumours fly and relationships are strained, we see the legendary psychiatrist and his student become entangled in ethical dilemmas and emotional turmoil, this film shows us a side to Freud we have never seen.
Director David Cronenberg does not lack the experience needed for such a high profile film. He has many successes under his belt such as The Fly (1986), Crash (1996) and A History of Violence (2005) in which he worked with one of the lead actors Viggo Mortenson. So as you can see David is a well established and celebrated director proving he is up to the task of taking on such a high profile film which, due to the cast and characters involved, comes with a great deal of expectation.
We are all familiar, or should be, with the work of both Viggo Mortenson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Road) and Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean, Domino) but the man to look out for is Michael Fassbender. Michael is an excellent and extremely versatile actor who has starred in films such as 300, Inglorious Basterds and most recently X-Men: First Class of which his performance was indeed, first class. He is definitely an actor to watch out for as he is currently going from strength to strength and starring in some truly brilliant films. A top choice by the team behind A Dangerous Method for Picking Michael for one of the lead roles, a decision which, by the looks of it, they will not regret.
A Dangerous Method looks to be one of this year's films to see. With an outstanding cast and an experienced director it should prove to be nothing less than excellent. Showing us Freud as we have never seen him before, and the relationships in his life, this is a must see for anybody studying or interesting in psychology. For the rest of us, I am sure we will become absorbed with these characters and leave the cinema wanting to know more about this man who was an expert in his field.
A Dangerous Method is released in cinemas November 23, so if you have not seen it already, get yourself to the cinema, I know I will be.
