What do you get if you mix American Pie with The Hangover? You get a complete mess, you get girls dancing semi naked around a pool, you get cars being driven into swimming pools.......you get Project X.
Three high school seniors throw a party as one last attempt at being one of the 'cool kids'. But nothing could prepare them for the night ahead. As the party grows and becomes increasingly out of hand these three normal kids become something of a legend.
That is really all there is to the plot of this film, but that is not to say its bad. In actuality it looks to be the complete opposite. This high school party film will have parents everywhere cancelling their vacations and keeping a closer eye on their kids. Starring three seemingly unknown actors, this adds a sense of realism to this film. This is something I always like to see, new actors showing us what they can do. Showing us we don't need to see the same old faces film in film out in order for it to be classed as a success. Although looking at these three actor's work schedules it's safe to say they wont be remaining 'new faces' for long. With a whole heap of films coming up, these three are going to be very busy indeed.
This is also a directorial debut for new comer Nima Nourizadeh, so it will be interesting to see what this guy can bring to the table. The writers are also getting their first major break with this film. This all adds to this sense of anticipation and expectation as there must be a lot of nerves surrounding this production with so many new faces both on and off camera. For me this is something I am very much looking forward to, a bunch of fresh faces hopefully bringing some fresh ideas to this otherwise used up american party genre.
It will be very hit and miss I think, it will either be slated by the critics or praised and at this point it is hard to tell which it is more likely to be. So if you are looking for something a little different, who knows, this film may be just that, although whether that will be a good or a bad thing we will have to wait to find out. Although me being the positive person I am, I think it will surprise a few people and entertain a whole lot more.
Project X is out in cinemas March 2.
