Irish Daily Star editor, Michael O'Kane, has decided to resign after he chose to publish topless photos of Kate Middleton back in September.

"As a result of the publication on 15 September 2012, issues arose with the shareholders of Independent Star Limited. Having considered those issues in tandem with Mr O'Kane, it is Mr O'Kane's decision to resign as editor of the Irish Daily Star, effective immediately," the Irish Daily Star said in a statement according to BBC.

O'Kane was suspended in September after the photos were republished from Closer, a French gossip magazine, reports E! News.

Following the publication of the photos a palace spokesperson was quoted by ABC News saying, "There can be no motivation for this action other than greed."

Northern and Shell, who are owners of the Irish Daily Star, did not agree with the tabloids decision to publish the photos and "very much regret the distress it has caused." They had threatened to shut the tabloid down altogether.
