The Beastie Boys put their own spin on music and have gone on to be such a major influence that they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now, they are hoping to put a new spin on the memoir.
The New York Times confirmed this morning that Michael Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) will write the memoir, which will be published by Random House imprint Spiegel & Grau in fall 2015. The surviving members of the group have not picked a title.
Spiegel & Grau publisher Julie Grau said that readers shouldn’t expect ‘just another memoir by an ageing music star.’ They are “interested in challenging the form and making the book a multidimensional experience,” she told the Times. “There is a kaleidoscopic frame of reference, and it asks a reader to keep up.”
Diamond and Horovitz will work with hip-hop journalist Sacha Jenkins, who is editing it. The book will also feature essays by other writers and a visual element.
“The first words out of Mike’s mouth were, ‘I don’t want to do a straight memoir,’” their agent, Luke Janklow, commented. It will be similar to their acclaimed 1990s magazine Grand Royal.
According to Rolling Stone, the group has been thinking about the book for years, even before Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch died in May 2012 at age 47.
