SNK: Your IMDB.com bio says that you began appearing in television commercials at 2 years old for products such as Life cereal, Bounty, Hasbro, and Nabisco. It was then that you discovered your love for dance and began taking jazz and ballet classes, usually the only boy in the class. What was that like?
CB: I loved it! *laugh* In fact, my parents switched me to an all-boys class. I hated it. I was like, ‘Where are all the girls?’ *laugh* I loved being the only boy in the class. That happens a lot with young male dancers being the only boy in the group. At school, you get made fun of. But, hey you get to be around girls in tights all day. *laugh*
SNK: You’ve starred in major motion pictures like 1999’s Galaxy Quest with Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman, which I have to tell you is a favorite movie of mine, You also on NBC’s medical drama ER. What were those experiences like?
CB: Doing Galaxy Quest I was so so young. I was like 10 years old at the time. At that age, it’s more like play than an actual job. I mean it couldn’t get better than playing a pilot on a spaceship. *laugh* It was a dream come true, I had a blast working on that and Sigourney Weaver was one of the sweetest people. She was just a doll and on ER George Clooney administered a rabies shot in my rear end. *laugh* So, that was the scene I did on that.
SNK: You continued to dance and eventually became one of the first students at the prestigious Debbie Allen Dance Academy. What was it like working with the legendary Debbie Allen?
CB: Debbie is one of the best teachers I’ve ever across in my life. She’s amazing. I definitely owe a lot as to who I am as an entertainer today to her as far as my work ethic and everything she taught me. And the Academy, it’s an incredible school. It teaches all different genres of dance all the way from ballet, modern, salsa, jazz, African, hip-hop, break dancing even some martial arts. It was just an all-around experience. I know I wouldn’t be who I am today if I didn’t go the Academy.
SNK: Your best known in the role of ‘Chad Danforth’ in the 2006 Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical and subsequent sequels. What was it like being part of such a successful television movie franchise?
CB: Honestly, we had no idea it would become what it did. At the time, it was just everything I loved doing at once. I got to dance an act. It was a huge part of my life.
SNK: Have you stayed in touch with any of your High School Musical costars?
CB: Yes, all the time. We all talk all the time.
SNK: You’ve just been cast on the One Life to Live online reboot. What has that been like so far?
CB: It’s been great! I’ve always wanted to do this form in the entertainment industry. I’ve done television and film and stage and music and getting to be a part of this project and it has been a great learning experience for me. I mean the pages we had to learn. I was used to 10 pages a day, here it’s like 80 pages. *laugh* It’s a great exercise and it’s definitely working my mind. Most of my scenes are with Erika Slezak [who plays, Viki Buchannan on the show] and she’s a veteran in this industry. I’ve learned a lot from her.
SNK: Your character’s name is ‘Jeffrey King.’ He’s a brand new character in town. Can you tell me a little bit about him, what other characters he’ll be interacting with, stuff like that?
‘Jeffrey’ is a journalist, who gets hired by Viki Buchannan to work at The Banner. There’s a great relationship between him and Viki, one of mutual respect that they have for each other. Another storyline with ‘Jeffrey’ will be with Matthew [Buchannan, played by Matthew Gorrie] and Dani [Manning, played by Kelley Missal] in their apartment, which is really funny stuff.
SNK: Your IMDB.com bio also says that you’re the national spokesperson for the Starlight Starbright charity foundation. Can you tell me a little more about that organization and how you became involved with it?
CB: I got involved with them a couple of years ago. I started off as an ambassador. They host so many different events, and do a lot of hospital visits. They also create meeting groups for the children and their families so they’re in an environment that is fun and also helps the families bond and know they aren’t experiencing this alone. It’s a beautiful organization. [The Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to brightening the lives of seriously ill children and their families by providing a broad array of both in-hospital and outpatient programs designed to enhance their ability to cope with the stress of illness.]
