If you want to go to the best restaurants in the world, you have to travel to Spain, the home of two restaurants that made it to the Top 5 of Restaurant magazine’s 50 Best Restaurants in the worlds.
El Celler De Can Roca in Girona, Spain topped the list. Mugaritz in San Sebastian came in at No. 4. According to The Huffington Post, this is the first time the restaurant has earned the honor, which had been held by Denmark’s Noma for the last three years. El Celler De Can Roca is run by Josep, Jordi and Joan Roca and has three Michelin stars.
Can Roca is considered an avant garde institution in the culinary world and some saw the win as a surprise, notes Time, although it has been on the list for eight years. “You have to admire Can Roca, because what they do is so beautiful, so poetic, so evocative,” Crave Sydney director Joanna Savill told Time. “But that’s not the global story at the moment. The global story, the new story, is about chefs reflecting who and where they are.”
There was just one U.S. restaurant in the Top 10 - New York’s Eleven Madison Park. Per Se, which is also in New york, came in at No. 11. Alinea in Chicago earned the No. 15 spot, while Le Bernadin in New york earned No. 19.
The best restaurant in Asia, according to the list, is Tokyo’s Narisawa, which was ranked at No. 20.
