Iron Man 3 director Shane Black will get to direct and co-write Doc Savage, based on the classic pulp character from the 1930s and ‘40s.

Sony Pictures said on Tuesday that it reached a deal with Black to do the film, notes The Hollywood Reporter. The Lethal Weapon writer has been working on a script for Doc Savage since 2009 and had hoped to direct it the following year, but then he was offered to do Iron Man 3.

The script was written with Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry and the producers include Neal H. Moritz and Ori Marmur of Original Film with Michael Usland.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be building a franchise from the ground up with Shane and this team,” Columbia production president Hannah Hannah Minghella and Columbia president Doug Belgrad said in a statement, reports Deadline. “Shane and Neal have a fantastic understanding of the character and a great take on the material and we can’t wait to get this production up and running.”

Doc Savage was a popular ‘30s and ‘40s character on the radio and in magazines. He had nearly unlimited skills, including super strength and intelligence. He was also a surgeon, scientist and inventor.

Black’s Iron Man 3 scored the second-highest debut at the box office this past weekend and recently reached $700 million worldwide, reports Box Office Mojo.
