August continues to be a slow month at the box office but Crazy Rich Asians dominated the new competition and remained the box office champion.
Crazy Rich Asians only dropped 5.7 percent during its second weekend and brought in $25 million. The film’s domestic gross stands around $76 million and this film is definitely going to cross $100 million domestically and it looks like a goal of $130 million is very possible.
It’s impressive that the film saw a very small drop between the first and second weekends. It is very rare to see a film accomplish this, especially not during a holiday weekend.
The Meg remained in second place after bringing in $13 million. The film’s domestic gross has crossed $105 million after three weeks. The film has become the 17th release of 2018 to cross $100 million domestically. The film’s worldwide gross is approaching $410 million.
The Happytime Murders opened in third place with a disappointing $10 million. The film opened in just under 3,300 locations and negative reviews seemed to hurt the opening of the film. I don’t see this film spending another weekend inside the top five.
Mission: Impossible—Fallout remained in fourth place with $8 million. The film’s domestic gross is just shy of $194 million. The film passed the original’s domestic gross and will pass Rogue Nation’s domestic gross this week. It still has potential to be the highest grossing film of the Mission: Impossible franchise.
Christopher Robin rounds out the top five actually rising a spot this weekend with $6.3 million. The film is sitting just shy of $80 million domestically. A $35 million international total has the worldwide gross of the film around $112.7 million.
A.X.L. opened in ninth place with $2.9 million. The film was limited to a small amount of locations for the opening, so a potential expansion could help the performance of this film. The same goes for the thriller Searching, which opened in a very limited release of only nine theaters. The film brought in $360,000 which is very good and when it expands wide next week should provide some good numbers.
Mile 22 and Alpha both took decent second-weekend drops. Mile 22 dropped 56 percent and brought in $6 million and stands around $25 million domestically. Alpha dropped 46 percent and brought in $5.6 million. The film stands just over $20 million domestically.
BlacKkKlansman ($5.3 million) and Slender Man ($2.8 million) round out the rest of the top ten.
Next weekend marks the end of the summer movie season and we only have two new releases. Searching will expand wide and the sci-fi action film Kin starring James Franco.
