Les Miserables is returning to Broadway in March 2014, 11 years after it completed its original historic run in New York.
The new production was first announced in February, while Tom Hooper’s film adaptation was still fresh in everyone’s minds. The film version was a major success for Universal studios and won three Oscars, including Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway. If it proved anything, it’s that people still love “I Dreamed A Dream” and the other iconic songs in the musical.
According to Playbill, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s musical will return to the Imperial Theatre, the same venue it called home for 13 years and 5,244 performances. The new production, which will be ‘re-imagined,’ is timed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its opening.
Previews start on March 1, 2014 and opening night is set for March 23, 2014. The original production ran started at the Broadway Theatre on March 12, 1987. It moved to the Imperial on Oct. 17, 1990 and closed on May 18, 2003.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Laurence Connor and James Powell, who directed the version touring North America now, will also direct the Broadway revival.
“This magnificent theater has the perfect blend of scale and intimacy for a story like Les Misérables, and I can’t wait to put together a brilliant company to bring this great musical to new generations of Broadway audiences,” producer Cameron Mackintosh said in a statement.
Les Miserables is based on the Victor Hugo novel and was first performed at London’s Barbican Theatre in 1985. It continues to run in the West End today.
