Apple announced today that it has reached a major milestone with its iPod Touch devices and plans to sell a new, cheaper model starting today.
The iPod Touch has been on the market since 2007 and has reached 100 million units sold, reports The Loop Insight. It was introduced as an alternate for the iPhone, giving users the ability to use apps and listen to music without a phone component and features a similar design.
According to The Los Angeles Times, the company also introduced a $229 model that is already available online. It will be in stores Friday.
This version is 16 GB, smaller than the 32 GB and 64 GB fifth-generation models that have been available since last year. It will include 4-inch retina display and a dual-core A5 chip. However, unlike the pricier models, Apple cut the rear facing camera but there is a front-facing camera.
The $229 model will also only be available in silver and black. The pricier models do have several color options like red and blue.
While the iPhone has cut into the market for iPods, the iPod Touch has continued to do well with younger consumers and is marketed as a great mobile gaming device.
