Disney’s first animated Marvel movie isn’t going to center on any major characters like Iron Man or Captain America. Instead, the studio has picked a lesser known team called Big Hero 6. The first footage of the film has been released, showing the film’s setting - San Fransokyo.
The video was first posted by the Los Angeles Times, which reports that the project is being directed by Winnie the Pooh’s Don Hall. The film centers on robotics engineer Hiro Hamada and his robot BayMax. The characters were created in 1998 by Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau, making it the most recent new Marvel property that Disney has tackled for the big screen.
“I was looking for something on the obscure side, something that would mesh well with what we do,” Hall said. “The idea of a kid and a robot story with a strong brother element, it’s very Disney.”
While the comic was set in Tokyo, Hall has decided to move it to a mythical, high tech city called San Fransokyo, a mix of Tokyo and San Francisco.
Hall told the LA Times, “Marvel properties take place in the real world...We were looking for something to do where we could make our own world — bring in the Japanese influences, have recognizable landmarks mashed up with a Japanese aesthetic.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is set to hit theaters on Nov. 7, 2014.
