Disney certainly knows how to put an A-list cast together for a musical. The studio has recruited Emily Blunt and The Good Wife’s Christine Baranski as the latest stars to join Into The Woods.
Blunt was linked to the project on Thursday, when The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the Looper actress is close to signing a deal to star.
The Wrap also reported that Baranski (left), who worked with director Rob Marshall on Chicago, is also in talks. The site noted that Tony winner James Corden (The Three Musketeers [2011]) is very close to signing on to play the male lead.
The Good Wife actress took part in a table read in October, playing Cinderella’s stepmother. A scheduling conflict with The Good Wife is the only obstacle keeping her from signing right away.
Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep are already on board to star in the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s fairy tale musical. Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal are also nearing deals to play princes for Cinderella and Rapunzel, respectively. Blunt would play the Baker’s Wife role.
While Pine and Gyllenhaal do not have any singing experience on film, Blunt did perform a song on the UK’s Gideon’s Daughter.
