The giant rubber duck that sailed into Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor earlier this month and put smiles on the faces of many has deflated.

The duck was created by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman and has toured around the world. He planned to take it to an American city next.

However, its time in Hong Kong took an odd turn overnight when suddenly the duck turned into a floating, flat yellow mess in the harbor. According to CNN, organizers met early Wednesday to discuss whether or not this was planned. It took hours for the city officials to issue a statement that it was planned. Since it took so long for the announcement, many in Hong Kong started speculating about the true circumstances of the planned deflation.

The following tweet was sent out later:

Hofman’s Rubber Duck has toured the world, visiting Osaka, Sydney, Sao Paolo and Amsterdam. It was planned to be on display in Hong Kong until June 9. CNN notes that when the duck was in Belgium in 2009, a vandal stabbed it 42 times, but Hofman continued to display it.
