Harvard is a place known for its scholars and history but not necessarily for its homeless population. John Christopher Frame explores the world of the homeless while taking his last graduate class one summer at Harvard University.
Frame used his people skills to enter the world of the homeless where he explored friendships, life and god on the steps of porches and tents in secret hiding places.
The book follows Frame as an interested Theology soon to be graduate that wants to under the world of the homeless around Harvard Square. He decides to spend ten weeks outside with the homeless in addition to studying at Harvard’s library for his Spanish final.
Frame gains a close relationship with several member of the outside community and is able to document their stories and become immersed in a culture where god is preached, life is debated and the usual drug deal goes awry.
Frame learns of the dangers of living on the street as well as the influence the police play in regards to the homeless.
Frame becomes their friend, their confidants, and family. He builds relationships that take him out of his comfort zone and introduce him to people that he would later call his own family and bring to his graduation. He is accepted into a world that he had once viewed from only the outside.
All proceeds from the sale of the book will be given to charities to help those in need.
The book gives an insight to a life that most of us are not accustomed too and it shows that all people, not matter how they live are just like everyone else. We are not so different after all.
