Earlier in the year, ABC Family officially picked up the 43-year-old single mom and “Live It Up” singers’ original drama, The Fosters. The series centers around a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological children that are raised by two moms.

Lopez, the executive producer of the show, tells Entertainment Weekly that her show takes chances. She says, “It’s about a biracial, lesbian couple who have biological and adopted children, all living together as a family.”

Where did Lopez get inspiration for this?

She tells ABC News that she has a nontraditional family. Lopez divorced her third husband Marc Anthony in July 2011. As a single mom, she wanted to give her children something they could relate to on TV to see that there’s no normal way a family should be.

She says, “Putting a show like this on to me is, look, there is no perfect of what family is supposed to be. It’s about love and that’s what I constantly remind myself of.”

The series stars Teri Polo and Sherri Saum as the moms, as they cohabitate with their biological child, an adopted set of twins, a teenager, and the foster child they take in.

Lopez shares in the ABC Family promo, “I am so excited to share with you the new TV show The Fosters. The show deals with family, parenting, teenage issues, unity, and of course, love.”

The Fosters premieres on ABC Family on Monday, June 3, at 8pm. You can check out the trailer down below, and visit the show’s page for more information.
