A screening of Kanye West’s “New Slaves” video was shut down Friday May 24 in Houston.
The police arrived to break up an “upbeat, respectful crowd” who gathered to watch the screening of West’s new video at Rothko Chapel. The police told everyone they had to leave or be arrested for trespassing according to the Houston Chronicle.
The show was shut down before it even began. The paper reported the police pulled cars onto the grass, flashed their lights, and put on their sirens.
The other two Houston screenings at The Bust Memorial and the Central Library had issues too. The screening at The Bush Memorial had technical difficulties and the Central Library screening was a no-show Billboard reported.
“All we say were the sprinklers come on and obnoxious people screaming Kanye threats,” fan Janet Quiroa said at The Bush Memorial screening.
West debuted “New Slaves” last week by projecting the video on 66 buildings across the world. He announced other showings on his website in preparations for his new album Yeezus, out June 18.
