A new song by 38-year-old singer-activist Lauryn Hill is taking flak for its homophobic undertones.
In “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix),” Hill sings about society’s downfalls, such as psychological massacre and superficial vanity, according to the Huffington Post.
Hill seems to blame the LGBT community for these problems, hammering “drag queens,” “girl men” and “social transvestism” as things that cause a “neurotic godless society.”
She also mentions “pimps pushers and harlotry” and “vice lords and yellow men junkies of popularity” in a similar context, apparently blaming them all for society’s ills and likening the LGBT community to actual criminals.
Hill released an explanation of the song, though it failed to clarify the meaning of the lyrics.
"I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there," Hill wrote on her website on May 6, according to Eurweb.
"In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly),” she continued, “I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!”
