Lauryn Hill has been sentenced to three months in jail for failing to pay her taxes for three calendar years.
Despite reportedly paying off her one million dollar debt this morning, a judge ordered the “Killing Me Softly” singer to 3 months in Federal Prison, 3 months of house arrest and 9 months on supervised release, TMZ reports.
Hill appeared in court in Newark, New Jersey today- nearly one year after charges of tax evasion surfaced. She is expected to begin her jail sentence by July 8. TMZ notes it remains unclear where she will serve her time.
Hill opted to make a statement in court telling the judge, "I was put into a system I didn't know the nature of. ... I'm a child of former slaves. I got into an economic paradigm and had that imposed on me.”
She continued, "I sold 50 million units ... now I'm up here paying a tax debt. If that's not likened to slavery, I don't know what is."
