On this week’s New Girl, Jess had a really bad day; Schmidt explored his past with Elizabeth; Nick hung out with Jess’s dad and it was Winston’s birthday!

This episode started where the last episode ended. Jess and Nick were bed at the beginning of the episode and in true Nick fashion; Nick was super weird about it. He half kissed her and then checked her pulse. She was alive, obviously, and he tried to fix her breakfast.

However, after he tried to fix her breakfast, Jess’s dad Bob (guest star Rob Reiner) comes in. He is in town for Cece’s wedding. Jess freaks out and gets a call from Peg (guest star Mary Lynn Rajskub) who offers Jess a job at a school. After a guilt trip, Nick decides to stay with Bob and promises Jess not to mention anything that went on between the two.

Between Nick and Bob, things were actually really funny. They did cool things like make sandwiches together and sat on the roof. Nick told him about “Yolanda Wilson,” a tall, fat, non-banged, not-quirky, beady-eyed girl that he was interested in. Yolanda Wilson, obviously, was Jess. And, Nick managed to get fatherly advice from Bob without admitting that he had slept with Jess. Until, he did. When he told him, Bob went crazy.

Meanwhile, Jess is subbing for a really terrible class. Kids running around screaming. They are just a bad class. Then when lunch rolls around, she rushes to get back to the crazy outside world.

While freaking out, she gets a call from Cece who slept on her henna tattoo and now has ink on her face. So she drives over there quickly. They try to use olive oil to get it off but instead it smears and makes Cece look like she has a full beard. (Check the video below. It was really the funniest moment of the episode.)

Then Jess rushes back to the loft only to find Nick and Bob fighting about Jess and Nick’s situation. Bob then says that Nick isn’t good enough for her because Nick and Bob are the same person. Before Jess can really stand up for Nick, she has to go back and sub for the terrible class.

I’m not a teacher and I’m not an expert on what teachers can and cannot say. However, I’m pretty sure that Jess can’t say “ass” in front of a bunch of middle school kids. And she did. Twice. She ranted about her life problems and one of the students offered her a pack of cigarettes. Cool.

Meanwhile, Schmidt made plans for lunch with Elizabeth. (This led to a glorious fat-Schmidt flashback.) Elizabeth showed up at Schmidt’s office and one of his coworkers came over. The coworker then mocked Elizabeth and Schmidt said that he didn’t know her. So Elizabeth walked away.

I love Elizabeth’s character. She’s smart and witty and doesn’t care what people think about her. To be completely honest, she reminds me of Cece. Of course, they look completely different, but I can see that Schmidt’s type is a strong, independent lady.
Elizabeth- who really didn’t care about what Schmidt thought- went on a date with another guy. Schmidt interrupted the date and they danced. It was funny and cute.

Now, complete side note, Jess, Nick and Schmidt are horrible friends. Winston literally told them all day that it was his birthday and they didn’t even care. I mean, come on. It is the guy’s birthday- give him just a little love!

Winston in this episode reminded me a lot of early Eddie Murphy characters. His comedic timing was down. Lamorne Morris really shines through and I wish they would use him more often. Maybe expand his romance with Daisy?

The episode ended on a happy note, though. Nick and Jess headed to the roof to have the romantic breakfast that never happened. Schmidt and Elizabeth also headed to the roof to stargaze. Then Winston headed up and thought that it was his surprise birthday party. It wasn’t but they still played along.

Happy Birthday Winston!

Next week is the finale, which means it is Cece’s wedding! Do you think she’s going to say ‘I do’ or will she be a runaway bride?
