Nicki Minaj is going back to her roots by focusing more on rap and less on pop for her third album.

In an interview with Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg and Ebro Darden, Minaj said instead of moving forward with more pop music like her second studio album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded she is returning to rap music Billboard reported.

“I was thinking if I really wanted to, I could go back in and make another pop song like that to sell but I’m choosing not to do it. I’m choosing to get back to my essence and feed the core hip-hop fan,” she said. “I feel like I need this because it’s just a more powerful platform for me . . . Even when I’m not on stage performing my rap songs, it’s more organic.”

Minaj’s pop hits such as “Super Bass” and “Starships” are her well-known pop and popular songs but she says she does not regret making them. “I wanted to experiment,” she said. My whole career has been a playing field to try new things. I never put a limit on myself. You should be able to try whatever the hell you want, along as you keep your integrity.”

A year ago Minaj had a feud with Rosenberg after his negative comments towards “Starships” and refused to perform at last year’s Summer Jam. The radio DJ and Minaj have reconciled. She said, “It’s cool. It’s water under the bridge. It was so long ago, I really can’t care. I can’t even act like I care.”

The rapper says she will start writing new music after she is done filming, “The Other Women,” where she plays Cameron Diaz’s assistant according to MTV.
