Ottavio Missoni, the patriarch of the famous Missoni fashion label, has died at age 92 in Northern Italy.
According to The Associated Press, Missoni’s death was announced by Missoni SpA, which said that he “passed away serenely” at his Sumirago home. The town also serves as the company’s headquarters.
Missoni became known around the world for his zigzag knitwear, which built a global fashion empire, notes the AFP. He began the brand in 1953 with his wife, Rosita Jelmini, and his designs have been worn by famous celebrities from JAckie Kennedy to Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge. Their daughter, Angela, is currently the Missoni brand’s creative director, while son Luca has a technical role.
Missoni was born on Feb. 11, 1921 in what is now Dubrovnik, Croatia. He fought in World War II and competed at the 1948 Olympics in track. In fact, his company began with athletic wear before creating their signature designs.
The company is still known for its innovation. The Metropolitan Museum and Whitney Museum in New York have both hosted exhibitions of his designs. They have also brought their products to the mass market with a deal with Target.
This is the second emotional blow to the Missoni family in just months. Missoni’s oldest son, CEO Vittorio Missoni, disappeared on a plane while vacationing in Venezuela. Vittorio, 58, and his wife are still missing and they are feared dead.
