In the wake of an estimated 26,000 sexual assaults reported in the military, Army Major General Gary Patton is speaking out against sexism in the military force.
According to USA Today, the director of Pentagon’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response said sexist remarks should be treated the same as racial slurs in order to decrease the sexual assault crisis.
"It's the climate of dignity and respect where there are no instances where sexual harassment, sexist behavior, sexual assault are tolerated," Patton told USA Today. "How will we know when we get there? We'll know when we get there when a sexist remark is treated with the same absolute disdain and visceral response as a racist slur is today in the military.”
Global Post reported that officials at the Pentagon are taking action by attempting to rid of posts from Facebook comprised of degrading photos of female Marines that appeared on a page called F’N Wook.
Patton plans to have the material deleted by July.
