Legendary songwriter Carole King will receive the Library of Congress’ George Gershwin Prize for Popular Song during a ceremony hosted by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, the White House announced today.
King was selected as the first female recipient of the award in December. It recognizes her incredible contribution to popular music, having co-written classic hits like “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “(You Make Me Feel) Like A Natural Woman,” “The Loco-Motion” and “So Far Away.”
The White House said that the ceremony will be part of the In Performance at the White House series. King will perform at the event, along with James Taylor, Billy Joel and Trisha Yearwood. Current stars like No Doubt’s Gloria Estefan, Emeli Sande and Jesse McCartney will also perform.
President Obama previously presented the award himself to Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Burt Bacharach & Hal David.
The Library of Congress is also hosting an invitation-only concert on Tuesday at the Coolidge Auditorium. King will perform at that show as well.
The event at the White House will take place on Wednesday and will be streamed live on the White House website. PBS will also air the concert on Tuesday, May 28 at 8 p.m.
