The Internship director Shawn Levy has been interested in producing a film adaptation of the revisionist Romeo & Juliet novel Rosaline for some time. The production is now in turnaround and is reportedly moving from Fox 2000 to Universal.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy’s 21 Laps will produce the film, which will be written by (500) Days of Summer team Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. The two writers recently worked with Levy on The Spectacular Now, which was shown at Sundance.
Rebecca Serle’s 2012 novel When You Were Mine is the basis for the project. It tells the classic Shakespeare story from the point of view of Rosaline, the woman Romeo dumps for Juliet. It’s considered a Wicked-esque version of Romeo & Juliet.
Cinemablend reports that this is the same project Allison Williams (Girls) was linked to earlier this month. While it would have been Williams’ first film role, THR’s sources say that no deals have been made as the project switches studios.
Williams was set to play the title character, while Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Dave Franco had been linked to the Juliet and Romeo roles respectively.
Levy recently directed Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in The Internship, which hits theaters next month.
