What started off as a review of Robin Thicke’s single “Blurred Lines” turned into an interesting journey with the destination being that of a lonely island. While the song itself is over three months old with a release date of March 26, 2013 according to the iTunes website the song has just hit number one on the Top 40 chart. The song is the leading single off of Thicke’s upcoming album with the same name.
The song has such a unique blend of soft R&B and rap that it makes it hard not to sway your hips to the beat. Thicke explained to the Breakfast Club that
“I've realized as I've gotten older that we all think we're living either in a black or white world, or on a straight path, but most of us are living right inbetween those straight lines” according to the Hot New Hip Hop webiste.
The music video for “Blurred Lines” caused quite the controversy. The video was released March 20, 2013 and featured Robin Thicke as well as the other artists that collaborated on the track with him, T.I. and Pharrell. The original, unrated version features the three artists surrounded by topless models and can only be found on the popular video-sharing website Vevo. The video bought into the popular Twitter-esque hashtag language, stamping the video every few seconds with #THICKE. There is a PG-13 version of YouTube, which you can find below.
The humor comes in if you take a glance at the sidebar and see the infamous Lonely Island and their new song titled “DANCE REHEARSAL” featuring the Swedish singer/songwriter Robyn. The song itself sticks true to the typical Lonely Island niche in the musical world – the song is raunchy, makes little to no sense and is just straight up funny. The music video for the song features LMFAO type dancers clad with grocery bagged hats with holes to see out of. This video as well is stamped with hastagged words, clearly poking fun at Thicke’s new video, even going as far as putting the link to the video as one of the hashtags.
