Hollywood has been looking to turn the life of Elton John into a biopic for some time now and it looks like the producers may have an early choice for the lead role - Tom Hardy.

A report from HitFix suggests that Hardy is being considered to play the “Crocodile Rock” singer in Rocketman, a biopic that was announced back in 2011. The site stresses that no offer has been made and there’s a possibility that Hardy himself might have no interest in it.

Playing John would be a big departure for Hardy, who is better known for his tough guy persona and starring in action films like The Dark Knight Rises and Lawless. In his next project, he has the lead role in Mad Max: Fury Road, which hits theaters in 2014. In another future project, he tries to climb Mount Everest in Everest.

There hasn’t been much news on Rocketman since it was announced, but it is still in the works. It was up for sale to distributors at Cannes this year, with Michael Gracey still attached to direct. Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) is writing the film and John is an executive producer.

Over a year ago, John said that he would like to see Justin Timberlake play him. Timberlake played John in the 2002 video “This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore” and John said in an LA Times interview that Timberlake was No. 1 on his wish list.
