The Great Gatsby came out a couple weeks ago, and while the movie has met with mixed reviews, the novel remains a classic. The most notable part of that book is the final line, which many of us remember having to dissect in high school English classes. Here's a quick refresher:
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
So we see that good climatic lines in books can be good. But do you know what's more fun? Bad climatic lines in movies. So, because it's fun, here are the ten worst climatic lines.
10. Snakes on a Plane: This line exemplifies what this list is all about. There's something fun about horrible dialogue and Samuel Jackson embraced it in the purposefully cheesy Snakes on a Plane. Be warned, this video contains cussing.
9. Troll 2: Like Snakes on a Plane, Troll 2 was a purely poor film. But unlike Snakes on a Plane, there seemed to be some true motivation behind the movie. Well, maybe not from the guy who delivered this classic line. Apparently, it was much cheaper to have a dweeb give a play by play of the action than actually present the troll's devastating attack. This line actually has a bit of a cult following online and the below clip has over 4 million views.
8. Rocky IV: This is absurd. Rocky goes and fights a Russian and, in the middle of the fight, figures out that the Cold War isn't necessary. So when he tells everyone that, they're like, "Oh, cool." And because he mumbles and is stupid, he feels the need to clarify his position. But then what he says is even more nonsensical babbling about change.
7. Commando: This isn't the last we'll see of Arnold on this list. It seems the mighty Austrian is expected to sell movies based on punches and explosions instead of well-thought words. No surprise there; here's a classic example of words amounting to nothing when muscles get involved.
6. Wicker Man: This whole movie was nonsensical, but when you filter it down to Nicholas Cage's super excited dialogue, it's just crazy-go-nuts. And there's some cussing and bees.
5. Air Force One: A whole movie can be about one goal, but when a character expresses that goal and reaches it within seconds, it comes across a little stupid. Like this:
4. X-Men:When a hero dispatches a villain, there's luckily usually not that many people around to hear the lame quips. This was the case for the climatic battle in X-Men when Storm defeated Toad. Unfortunately, the cameras were rolling and audience had endure her rambling. But Halle Berry's character has survived and is set to return in next year's X-Men: Days of Future Past.
3. Star Wars: Through out the prequels, there was an undercurrent of pompously inane dialogue among the Jedi. Then it all came to a front:
2. Batman and Robin: I told you we weren't through with Arnold. Batman and Robin was a feature length display of ice jokes and childish gags. Puns, puns, puns:
1. The Dark Knight Rises: But don't think we've come so far. This one gets the top spot because it should have known better. The movie was great, but it's as if they didn't know what to do in the climatic moment.
After Batman Begins, the most recent Batman trilogy belonged to its villains. Batman was left with the cool gadgets and empty dialogue. So when he finally confronts Bane in the broken Gotham, it's no surprise that Bane gets to say something cool like "So, you've come back to die with your city," and Batman's reply:
