Bad Teacher, the 2011 comedy starring Cameron Diaz as a teacher who goes bad and tries to win money for breast implants, is getting a sequel. Sony’s Columbia Pictures officially announced that the script is in the works and Jake Kasdan is coming back to direct.
According to a press release posted at Collider, Sony has hired Justin Malen to pen the script. It is being developed with Diaz in mind, but she hasn’t officially signed on yet.
The announcement didn’t mention if any of Diaz’s co-stars would be back. Justin Timberlake, Jason Segel and Lucy Punch rounded out the lead cast of the original.
Sony Pictures production president Hanna Minghella said in the statement that they love “Justin’s take on the material – it hits all the notes that made the first film such a breakthrough hit and also takes the characters in a new direction that is fresh and fun.”
Deadline reports that Bad Teacher grossed $216 million worldwide, which is impressive for an R-rated comedy.
While the film earned mixed reviews, it has also spawned off a CBS series that Sony TV and CBS TV Studios are co-producing. It earned a 13-episode order and should air in mid-season. Ari Graynor is starring.
Segel, Diaz and Kasdan are currently working on Sex Tape, which Sony will release next summer.
