The Warner Bros./Alcon Entertainment family film Dolphin Tale is getting a sequel, which will be released on Sept. 19, 2014.

The first news of Dolphin Tale 2 came from Variety in May, when director Charles Martin Smith agreed to return and write the script. Alcon head Andrew Kosove had said at the time that negotiations were still ongoing and that it hadn’t received the greenlight yet.

On Tuesday, both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the sequel has gotten the go-ahead from Alcon.

Dolphin Tale 2 will be based on another true story, inspired by Winter the Dolphin, who lost his tail because of a crab trap. The new film will bring in Hope, a baby dolphin rescued in 2010 by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Winter and Hope are expected to play themselves in the new film.

Harry Connick Jr. played Dr. Clay Haskett in Dolphin Tale, which grossed a decent $72 million in the U.S. and $23 million abroad in 2011. It was released in 3D and co-starred Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Kris Kristofferson. Connick is currently in talks to reprise his role.
