Universal Pictures and Focus Features’ Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation will hit theaters on Aug. 1, 2014.
In a post on Twitter, Focus included an image that featured the tagline ‘Charlie Tango You are cleared for landing,’ referring to the helicopter owned by the main character, billionaire Christian Grey. The official Fifty Shades Twitter page also confirmed the news.
The announcement comes just a week after Focus hired Nowhere Boy director Sam Taylor-Johnson to direct. Kelly Marcel is writing the script based on E.L. James’ novel and Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca are producing. James is co-producing.
Focus has made no casting announcements, so rumors are still flying around centered on who may play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the star of Kick-Ass and Taylor-Johnson’s husband, would not play Christian. The site notes that Focus may be looking to hire an Anastasia first, with Felicity Jones and Alicia Vikander’s names being thrown around.
If Fifty Shades is released as planned, it will be out on the same day as Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
