Man of Steel, Warner Bros.’ new Superman reboot, opened in China this week and had a stunning opening day, making around $5.9 million.
The Zack Snyder-directed film opened in china on Thursday and the one-day total means that it will easily surpass Superman Returns’ entire run in just days. According to The Los Angeles Times, Superman Returns finished its run in China with just $8 million in 2006.
However, Man of Steel didn’t do as well as Iron Man 3, which grossed $21 million on its opening day. Iron Man 3 did open on China’s Labor Day holiday, though and Disney made a special cut of the film to include more Chinese stars and exclusive scenes.
Man of Steel is facing tough competition in the U.S. this weekend with Monsters University and World War Z both opening on Friday. In China, the film will also have to compete with Badges of Fury, starring Jet Li. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Li’s film opened on Friday. Keanu Reeves’ Man of Tai Chi opens on July 5.
The next big Hollywood films to hit China are Will Smith’s After Earth and Fast and Furious 6.
Man of Steel grossed $125.1 million in its first weekend in the U.S., smashing the record for the biggest June opening.
