On Thursday night, a small plane collided into an apartment building in Herndon, Virginia.

David Ventura, his wife, and children were sleeping in their top floor apartment when a Cessna 177B tried to land an emergency landing when the planed ran out of fuel.

According to the Associated Press, there was an electrical problem from within when the engine cut off. The plane originally was to land at Manassas, Va., but tried to land at Dulles Airport.

“I thought a bomb had gone off in the building,” Ventura told local news. ”It was such a big explosion.”

Larson was taking aerial infrared photographs for the photography company he works for.

Police spokeswoman Connie Gellar said the pilot, William Larson, was the only person who sustained serious injury, but nothing life threatening when he was taken to the hospital. The other passenger from the plane and a resident in the building were treated on the scene for minor injuries.

After the collision, police, fearing a spark from the plane might cause an explosion, evacuated the apartment building. None of the Ventura family members were injured.
