With the release of their new record, Grinning Streak, the Barenaked Ladies have brought back the 1990s into the mainstream once again. With strong tracks of electronica and acoustic anthems, it becomes plainer and plainer by each passing number that they are here to stay.
Starting with the opening track, “Limits”, we are thrown into the electronica feel of this record that ends with a strong funky piano riff. With a song like “Off His Head”, we are brought back into the old school 1990s pop feel which is encouraging.
Plus, with lyrics from such songs like “Gonna Walk” like “If I could use a walking superpower, I would use it to come and find you” and “I’m gonna walk till I get to the bottom of your heart”, we see that the fun and interesting lyrics that were a staple for the Barenaked Ladies are still alive and well in their tracks, especially in this album.
All in all, this album on the whole was a pretty solid one, and a step back in time towards where pop rock was just a mere decade and a half ago. It certainly was not a perfect album, with songs like “Daydreamin” and “Keepin It Real” falling flat, but all in all it was a solid record with a perfect close with the song, “Smile”.
