Bert and Ernie, two ofSesame Street’s most loveable characters, celebrated the Senates decision to rule the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional by proudly displaying their longstanding kinship for one another on the cover of The New Yorker.
Bert and Ernie have long been assumed to be a gay couple on the children’s educational program, but was not truly confirmed until this week. According to Huffington Post, Sesame Street denied that the two represented a homosexual relationship in 2011 saying that the puppets “do not have a sexual orientation.”
The iconic magazine cover shows the two puppets relaxing in embrace on the coach, their backs to the cover with the title, “Bert and Ernie’s Moment of Joy” as they watch the ruling on television.
The artist, Jack Hunter, reportedly first submitted the image over Tumblr. He gushed about the success of his work, the ruling and the meaning it shares telling the New Yorker Culture Desk, “It's amazing to witness how attitudes on gay rights have evolved in my lifetime. This is great for our kids, a moment we can all celebrate."
