Dan Cathy, the president of the Chick-fil-a fast food chain, is back in the media spotlight after sending an anti-gay marriage tweet moments after the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and allowed same-sex marriages to resume in California. Cathy quickly deleted the tweet, but not before it was published again in the media.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Cathy’s tweet read, “Sad day for our nation; founding fathers would be ashamed of our gen. to abandon wisdom of the ages re: cornerstone of strong societies.” Cathy did delete it, but screenshots of the tweet are being circulated around the web.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court struck down DOMA, which prevented the federal government from recognizing legal same-sex marriage. THe Court also refused to take on California’s Proposition 8, allowing same-sex marriage to start up again in the state.
According to The Associated Press, Chick-fil-a later issued a statement that read, “Dan recognizes his views do not necessarily represent the views of all Chick-fil-A customers, restaurant owners and employees, so he removed the tweet to eliminate any confusion.”
Chick-fil-a was at the center of the gay marriage debate last summer after Cathy blasted gay marriage in a radio interview. Cities like Boston and Philadelphia said that the company couldn’t open restaurants there, but the company claimed it reached a one-day sales record at the height of the controversy. In September, the Atlanta company agreed to stop funding anti-gay groups.
