While the rest of the country rushes to try out Dunkin’ donuts’ glazed donut breakfast sandwich, Manhattanites are going nuts over the Cronut, a mix of a croissant and a doughnut. The treat is only available at a single bakery in SoHo and there is already a black market asking silly prices for it.
According to Time, the Cronut is the creation of Doninique Ansel Bakery and go for $5 each. Each treat is deep-fried in grapeseed oil and the bakery only makes 200 a day. Fans line up at the bakery every morning just to get a taste of it.
Because word about the treat has spread so quickly, there is already listings for it on Craigslist. BusinessInsider reports that some listings have reached as high as $55 depending on the location.
A listing for Saturday asks for three of them for $30. The three people who posted the ad wrote, “willing to pay up to 600x market value ($30) or in a more meaningful metric twice our hourly wage per cronut.”
One of the best listings was found by Bloomberg News food critic Ryan Sutton. The person behind the listing says that he’ll deliver a Cronut to anyone living in Manhattan for $20 ($25 above 59th Street). If you live in Queens, it’s $30 each and if you’re in Brooklyn, each will cost you $40.
Cronuts are offered in various flavors. The newest is Lemon-Maple.
