Singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper was surprised by friends and co-stars of Kinky Boots to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.”

Lauper’s mega hit put her on the map in 1983, and to commemorate 30 years since its release, the Kinky Boots ensemble put together a music video to the pop tune. Lauper was completely surprised and became very emotional upon viewing the video.

"It's so sweet, I'm crying," Lauper told People Magazine . "The Kinky Boots cast is so funny, and all the other shows participating is the sweetest thing I've ever seen," the 59-year-old added as she gushed about the video.

The video stars media figures and entertainment icons such as Whoopi Goldberg, Kelly Ripa, Rosie O’Donnell, and Katie Couric. The famous friends of the singer lip synch to the song while dancing with a pair of red lace-up boots.

The homage to Lauper’s hit feel-good musical is appropriate, as her debut as Broadway songwriter for the show’s music and lyrics has earned her a Tony nomination. The show has 13 total nominations.

In an interview with The Star Lauper expressed joy at the success of the show and its recognition by the American Theatre Wing.

“Oh my God, I’m so excited about it,” Lauper said. “Who’d a thunk it? Little Cynthia Ann Lauper maybe winning a Tony Award. Excuse me while I just lie down and faint for a coupla minutes.”

The entire Kinky Boots experience has been the “neatest” experience for the singer.

“It’s the most extraordinary time of my life. It is, honey,” Lauper said. “You can write that down.”
