It sounds like NBC and Sony TV actually listened to fans of Community - season four was not very good. So, they brought back creator Dan Harmon to run his show the way it should have been all along.
Last week, Harmon said during a podcast taping that NBC and Sony had asked him back to the show and other reports around Hollywood confirmed this. In response to a fan on Twitter, Harmon confirmed it himself on Saturday, telling fans to thank star Joel McHale.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harmon will take back the reins of the show as showrunner. He was fired after the third season and replaced by David Guarascio and Moses Port, who were supposed to help the show’s low ratings. Instead, season four’s ratings were on par with season three, so the new direction they took the show clearly wasn’t making a big difference.
THR also noted that writer and executive producer Chris McKenna is in talks to come back. He left after agreeing to an overall deal with Universal TV in 2012.
During a talk with an audience in Los Angeles this weekend, Harmon said that he hadn’t watched season four yet. “Sony said they’re very interested in recording me watching it as a commentary track” for season four, he added. While that could just be a joke, it would be great to hear his thoughts on the show’s only season he didn’t control.
It’s still not known when Community’s fifth season will start, sicne the show isn’t on NBC’s fall 2013 schedule.
