We Can Be Heroes is a long running attempt by DC Entertainment to turn interest in superheroes into money used to battle starvation in the Horn of Africa. Now, with Man of Steel's release quickly approaching, DC is trying to capitalize on the surge in Superman popularity to save actual lives.

According to IGN, DC launched We Can Be Heroes in 2012. The campaign takes donations and sells DC memorabilia and turns the profits into food in the Horn of Africa.

Early in 2013, they focused on Batman in order to spike donations. And it worked - that effort garnered $150,000 worth of support. Now that Superman is up to bat at the cinema, it makes sense that Phase 2 of the operation will feature the last son of Krypton.

Newsarama reports that the Superman inspired items for sale will be sold via IndieGoGo, a crowdfunding site. Possible purchases range from $10 digital comic purchases to $25,000 uber-items.

When it's all said and done, Superman may save some real lives with the help of generous fans and creators.
