The Walt Disney Company released another slate of important dates for movie fans - particularly Marvel fans - to look forward to. The studio also set a release date for its musical Into The Woods and announced a new title to The Muppets sequel.
The most immediate film impacted by Thursday’s announcements is Saving Mr. Banks, a film about the lengths Walt Disney went to in order to make Marry Poppins and starring Tom Hanks. Disney is betting that it will be an Oscar contender and is still planning on a wide release on Dec. 20, 2013. However, as The Hollywood Reporter notes, the film will get a limited release on Dec. 13, giving it more exposure before the end of the year.
The Muppets 2, which was briefly known as Muppets...Again!, has been retitled Muppets Most Wanted. It’s still coming out on March 21, 2014. The film’s human cast includes Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais.
Surprisingly, Disney has decided to schedule a sequel to Planes, the Cars spin-off hitting theaters on Aug. 9. Planes: Fire & Rescue will be out on July 18, 2014.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Disney has also scheduled Rob Marshall’s film version of Stephen Sondheim's Into The Woods for Christmas Day, 2014. That’s also the day Sony is releasing its Annie remake. Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp are slated to star.
Two unknown Marvel films were scheduled for May 6, 2016 and May 5, 2017. There were no further details on these projects, so Marvel fans can let their minds run wild with speculation.
