Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was charged Thursday for the murder of three Boston Marathon victims and fatally shooting a police officer. New evidence in the case suggests that Tsarnaev sought out information on how to create the homemade bombs from an Al-Qaeda website.
USA Today reports that Tsarnaev was charged Thursday in a 56 indictment detailing how Tsarnaev and his older brother Tarmerlan, deceased, constructed the bombs which lead to the death of 3, injuring 200 as well as killing a police officer. He is also being charged with killing his older brother as he ran over him in an attempt to flee police following a shootout.
According to court documents, the Tsarnaev brothers used information from Defense of the Muslim Lands, The First Obligation after Imam by Abdullah Azzam to help aide them in their attack. The documents note that the publication “advocates violence designed to terrorize the perceived enemies of Islam, among other things.”
If convicted, Tsarnaev could face the death penalty, Reuters reports. His 27-year-old brother Tamerlan began preparing for the attack nearly two months in advance. He reportedly travelled to New Hampshire where he purchased 48 mortar shells and eight pounds of explosive powder.
