Emma Watson has reportedly signed on to star in a new franchise called The Queen of the Tearling. The project would reunite her with the producers behind the Harry Potter franchise, Warner Bros. and David Yates’ Heyday Films.
According to Variety, which broke the news, Warner Bros. has yet to find a director or writer for the project. They have just acquired the rights to the book series by Erika Johansen and features a 19-year-old heroine three centuries after an environmental disaster. The villain is a Red Queen who has all the power.
The novels haven’t been published yet, but HarperCollins will have the books our next year. It’s being described as a female Game of Thrones (which is odd because GoT has plenty of female characters in major roles).
Courtenay Valenti and Racheline Benveniste are producing for Warner Bros. Watson is also taking an executive producer credit.
Watson played Hermione in the Harry Potter series, but since then has taken roles in smaller productions like The Perks of Being A Wallflower and Sofia Coppola’s new movie The Bling Ring. She was linked to 50 Shades of Grey, but debunked those rumors herself. There were also rumors of her starring in Disney’s Cinderella, but the role went to Lily James.
