On the first Friday of every June, Americans get to celebrate National Donut Day. So, for a moment, let’s just forget about the government spying on our Internet and phone activity and just enjoy a doughnut.
The holiday got a sizeable boost in the media earlier this week when Dunkin’ Donuts announced that the Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich was launching nationwide today. It features a fried egg and two strips of bacon in between the classic glazed doughnut. Yum!
According to Boston.com, you can also get a free doughnut with any purchase of a beverage at Dunkin’ Donuts.
As we reported last year, the holiday was born in 1938, when the Salvation Army decided to honor the women who provided soldiers with the delicious treat during World War I.
The Huffington Post reports that the Dutch are credited with bringing the treat to the U.S. They called it the oliekoecken.
One really cool fact about donuts is that today’s habit of dunking them in coffee can be credited to one of the best comedies ever made, Frank Capra’s It Happened One Night. In the film, Clark Gable teaches Claudette Colbert the “right way” to eat a doughnut.
