Jack White has saved a Detroit a historic music hall from going up for auction.
Former White Stripes guitarist has paid $142,000 to pay off the Masonic Temple from back taxes. To show its gratitude, the historic music hall will rename one of the two theatres inside to Jack White Theatre, according to local Detroit news.
“Jack’s donation could not have come at a better time and we are eternally grateful to him for it,” said Detroit Masonic Temple Association president Roger Sobran. “Jack’s magnanimous generosity and unflinching loyalty to this historic building and his Detroit roots is appreciated beyond words.”
Jack White is a Detroit native, where his mother once served as an usher for the theatre. The New York Times reports the White Stripes played at the Masonic Temple several times as a headliner, where twice their concerts were sold out. Since 2011, the band has split up.
Besides having the White Stripes, the temple has held performances from the Who, the MC5, and Rolling Stones.
The Masonic Temple, located in downtown Detroit, is a block long, 14-stories high, and able to set 1,586 people.
