Jefferson Airplane drummer, Joey Covington died Tuesday in a car accident at the age of 67.

According to TMZ, Covington was driving around 5pm on Tuesday when his Honda Civic swerved off the road, hitting a retaining wall. The coroners report found that Covington was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The force and speed of the car sent it flying to a nearby driveway, several feet above the crash site. A guest at a nearby hotel saw the car and victim and tried to resuscitate Covington, unsuccessfully. The Drummer died at the scene.

A close friend of Covington says the musicians wife believes a stroke or heat attack could have caused the accident, police believe there were no drugs or alcohol involved according to the Desert Sun.

Covington was the drummer for Jefferson Airplane and the descendent band, Jefferson Starship.
Covington was a self-taught drummer; he helped found Hot Tuna in 1969 with Jefferson Airplane band mates.
