John Mayer has released the first single for Paradise Valley, his follow-up to Born & Raised. The track is called “Paper Doll” and it’s already being speculated that he takes shots at Taylor Swift throughout.
The lyric video has prancercise creator Joanna Rohrbach showing off a “prance to romance to” while lines from the song appear on the screen. “You're like 22 girls in one/ And none of them know what they're running from/ Was it just too far to fall/ For a little paper doll,”
he sings in the chorus, notes Billboard.
Of course, the line mentioning “22,” could immediately make one think of Swift’s hit single “22.” MTV News draws some other connections to Swift’s song “Dear John,” which was all about her relationship with Mayer. “Someone's gonna paint you another sky,” is a line in “Paper Doll,” which could be linked to the “Dear John” line “You paint me a big blue sky and go back and turn it into rain.”
Then again, it might just be a case of reading too much into the song. Between now and the time the album comes out, Mayer will have plenty of time to explain.
Mayer announced last month that he was working on a new album, which will be produced by Don Was, who worked on Born & Raised. He’s been using his Facebook page to keep fans up to date and he posted the album cover on Tumblr.
