Johnny Depp’s makeup that he wore to complete his transformation to Tonto in the upcoming Lone Ranger made him look so unrecognizable that even his longtime collaborator didn’t recognize him.

In a new interview, Depp and makeup artist Joel Harlow talked about the actor’s transformation into the character for the first time.

"Joel Harlow built the makeup and he came over and took some pictures," Depp told MTV News. Harlow then said, "I took those photographs to Jerry Bruckheimer. Johnny showed it to Jerry and Jerry said, 'This is great; who is this?' "

Depp’s co-star, Armie Hammer, who plays the lead role, was also really impressed with his costume, saying "The first time I put on the mask, I put it on just thinking, 'This is going to be cool.’” Depp said that Hammer plays the Lone Ranger “so beautifully.”

Meanwhile, Depp recently opened up to Rolling Stone about quitting alcohol and not relying on it to ease the pain of his split from longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis.

The Huffington Post notes he said, “I just decided that I pretty much got everything I could get out of it. I investigated wine and spirits thoroughly, and they certainly investigated me as well, and we found out that we got along beautifully, but maybe too well."

He continued, “In terms of the breakup, I definitely wasn't going to rely on the drink to ease things or cushion the blow or cushion the situation. Cause that could have been fatal. I felt it was my duty to be real clear throughout that.”
